We carry our phones everywhere. It feels strange and unsettling when we can’t feel them. We twitch, worried we’ve lost something.
methaphone can help you manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It can fill that hole in your back pocket. It can fill that hole in your hand. Opioid addicts have used methadone to help step down from dependency, and now you have this.
methaphone looks like a simple acrylic slab — and it is.
But it’s also a stand-in, a totem, and an alibi. It’s the first step on the road to freedom.
Take it instead of your phone. Let it ride along in you jacket or your jeans. If you’re anxious, rub the surface with your thumb. When you need to avert your gaze, it’s there for you to pull out and look through.
Cigarette smokers have their patch, you have methaphone.
The Plan
The plan is to build the first 80 methaphones. This will allow us to solve all the manufacturing details, ship you a great product, and not totally overwhelm ourselves. We’re building these in clear, green edge acrylic.
We will also make a few limited edition neon versions (see below).
If they are wildly successful, then we may make more.
How we’re building methaphone
We’ve prototyped these in with two corner sizes – 1/4″ and 1/2″ radius – see the picture above. We like the 1/2″ better so that’s what we’ll be producing and shipping. You can see the FINAL SHAPE in the NEON device above. The green edge acrylic version will also be in that same shape.
We’ve chosen green edge acrylic for the device. It has the appearance of glass without the risk of breaking. It’s comfortable to carry and hold. We’ve settled on 1/4″ thickness which is closer to modern phones.

Timing and Budget
It will take about two weeks from placing the final order to the device arriving. We’re estimating a week of pack and ship, so you should expect to have your device within four weeks of the campaign ending.
We’ve budgeted cushion in all of our timing and cost estimates in the case that something unexpected occurs.
Our fundraising will cover the fixed costs of project. Orders beyond that will will be breakeven or profitable.
